The Preamp DI Shootout
Welcome to the first-ever scientific Preamp DI shootout for bowed strings!Preamp DI Pedals Have become the most arguably the most indispensable tool for string players today. The ability to boost, mute, and shape your tone as well as splitting your signal to an amp and the house are features that all of the pedals in this class share. While their are many more preamp eq’s on the market in order to make a true “Apples To Apples” to comparison we limited the test to those that live in pedals on the floor and are designed for live use. While these pedals all share the aforementioned features, they each have their own strengths and weaknesses as well as very different sounding eq’s. In this test, our goal was to give you the chance to hear the pedals for yourself, but also to hear from our testers who have live experience with all of the pedals in the test and our very own Scott Fraser (Sound designer for The Kronos Quartet) about their take on each pedal. For basic info and stats about the individual units, click on our Preamp Library 3.0.
Tabletop Reviews
These video breakdowns with Jacob, Paul and renowned engineer Scott Fraser (Kronos Quartet) not only cover build quality, ease of use, and the features of each box, but go deeper. Paul, Scott and Jacob had some strongly subjective opinions, especially regarding the EQ and musicality of each box as it relates to bowed strings, and there are so many great nuggets of information for aspiring live players, that we kept each review in its entirety. The listener is encouraged to listen to the tracks and form their own opinions.
